Google Ads vs Meta Ads for Ecommerce: Where to Spend Your First ₹1 Lakh
Search captures existing demand. Social creates it. That single distinction explains most of what follows, and getting it wrong is why a lot of first ad budgets disappear without a clear lesson.
Start With Whether Demand Exists
If people are already searching for your product category — protein powder, running shoes, ghee — search advertising puts you in front of buyers at the moment of intent, and it will usually be the more efficient first rupee. If your product is genuinely novel, or the buying decision is driven by desire rather than a stated need, nobody is searching for it and social is where you have to create the demand first.
The quickest check costs nothing: look at search volume for your category terms. Substantial volume means the demand exists and you are competing for it. Little or none means you are building a market, and search will simply have nobody to show your ad to.
A Realistic First Allocation
For an established category, weight the first budget toward search — brand terms, the highest-intent category terms, and shopping placements — while running a smaller social budget purely to learn which creative resonates. For a new category, invert it: most of the budget to social to generate awareness and gather audience data, with a small search budget defending your own brand name so you are not paying competitors to intercept people looking for you.
The Mistake That Wastes Most First Budgets
Splitting evenly and switching off whichever performs worse in the first fortnight. Both platforms need enough conversion volume to optimise, and a budget divided in half often gives neither enough signal to learn from. You end up with two underperforming campaigns and no reliable conclusion. Commit properly to one, learn what works, then expand.
Measurement Reality in 2026
Platform-reported conversions are modelled, and the two platforms will both claim the same sale. Treat their numbers as directional. Server-side conversion tracking — the Conversions API on Meta and equivalent server-side tagging on Google — materially improves signal quality now that browser-side tracking is limited. And judge overall performance against your own blended figure: total ad spend against total revenue, from your own analytics, not from either dashboard.
