When to Move to Shopify Plus — And What the Migration Actually Costs
Most brands move to Shopify Plus a year later than they should, or a year earlier than they need to. Both mistakes are expensive in different ways. Moving early means paying enterprise fees for features nobody on the team is ready to use. Moving late means a year of manual workarounds, blocked promotions and a checkout you cannot touch.
The Four Signals You Have Outgrown Standard Shopify
First: you need checkout customisation. Standard Shopify locks the checkout. If your business depends on custom fields, B2B rules, conditional shipping logic or a bespoke upsell at the payment step, you are on the wrong plan. Second: your discount logic has outgrown the native engine — tiered pricing, customer-group pricing, or stacking rules that Shopify Scripts alone can express. Third: you are running multiple storefronts, currencies or markets and managing them as separate stores. Fourth: your traffic spikes during campaigns are large enough that API rate limits start throwing errors during flash sales.
Notice that revenue is not on that list. Revenue is the number Shopify sales teams lead with, but it is a poor signal on its own. A ₹5 crore brand with a simple catalogue may never need Plus. A ₹1 crore B2B brand with customer-specific pricing needs it immediately.
What the Migration Actually Involves
The store data — products, customers, orders — moves cleanly. That part is genuinely straightforward and it is the part every sales deck focuses on. The work sits everywhere else: re-implementing every app integration against the new store, rebuilding your theme against current Shopify standards rather than lifting the old one across, migrating Scripts to Shopify Functions, and re-verifying every payment and shipping flow end to end.
Budget for the apps specifically. Most brands run somewhere between eight and twenty apps, and each one needs reconnecting, reconfiguring and retesting. This is usually the single most underestimated line in a migration plan.
The Costs Nobody Quotes
Beyond the platform fee, plan for: theme rebuild rather than theme port, app reconfiguration across your whole stack, staff retraining on the new admin capabilities, and a period of parallel running where both stores are live while you verify orders flow correctly. Also plan for an SEO safety net — a complete URL map with 301 redirects, verified before launch, not after. Migrations that skip this lose organic traffic for months, and that loss is far more expensive than the migration itself.
Our Recommendation
Do not migrate during your peak season, and do not migrate and redesign in the same release. Separate them. Migrate on the existing design, verify everything works, then redesign. If something breaks you know which change caused it — and during a migration, that clarity is worth more than the time it appears to cost.
